Changes to Instant Payment (May 2017)

The Instant Payment toggle is a feature that allowed you to control whether a buyer can purchase your item immediately or not. Turning Instant Payment on made the listing immediately available for purchase via the green “BUY” button, while Instant Payment turned off meant the buyer had to message the seller via a grey “MESSAGE” button to work out transaction details before purchasing the item.

As of May 2017, we've removed the Instant Payment toggle from all new listings. This means that you need to connect your PayPal to Depop to list an item, so that you can get paid when it sells. All new items listed will be available for immediate purchase.

Why have we done this?

We decided to do this for two reasons: to make buying and selling on Depop a simpler, easier experience, and to keep you safe. As the Depop community continues to grow, your safety is our top priority, and we can only protect transactions that occur in Depop using the 'BUY' button. Connecting your Depop Shop with a secure and protected payment provider ensures that all sales made in Depop are protected.

What do I do if I have items with Instant Payment turned off?

Although you aren't required to go back and edit items with Instant Payment turned off, we highly recommend that you do. Items with Instant Payment turned on show up in more search results and sell significantly quicker.

You can edit an item and turn Instant Payment on by navigating in-app to: Profile > My Depop Shop > tap item > tap the '...' expand icon > tap edit item > turn the Instant Payment toggle on

What do I do if I can't connect a PayPal account?

At this time, you must connect your PayPal account to Depop in order to sell. To open a PayPal account, you must be at least 18-years-old. If you are under 18-years-old, you can sign up for a Depop account using a parent or guardian’s PayPal account details, as long as you have received permission to do so first.

What if I'm posting about something that isn't for sale?

Shout posts, bundles, meet the seller posts, and posts about sales/promotions are all still perfectly fine to list. (And encouraged!) Just list as normal and set any price. If someone accidentally purchases your post, you can issue them a refund in PayPal by following these instructions.
